The long and complex histories of ‘The Rocks’ location, are united by its presence as a place of creative play, friendship and survival in children’s lives.
This piece draws together the traditional use of bronze for public statuary with a contemporary site-specific practice. Leonie took inspiration from the materiality of the wall itself. The modelling of this hand- sculpted work is representative of the lines and textures in the mined blocks of the sandstone wall, the mortar that holds it together, and the rocks that surround it. This sculptural mark making prompts an inquisitive engagement from the viewer, inviting them to sit with the work and touch it.
Metal patinas which have been used throughout the bronze canon, reflect colours which can also be found here in the sandstone wall. This reciprocal, historical and textural relationship between traditional materials speaks to the history of art in the public realm and the transformation of natural materials through human endeavour. The convergence of these materials will increase over time as the bronze ages with the wall.
The curious touch of children’s hands and the ways in which people move around the work, will become a part of its ageing and colouring process, making its evolution a collaborative emergence, rooted in the tenderness of childhood exploration, and the touch from the community surrounding it.
